During one extended riff, Trump tucked in a reference to her “staying home” in the days before the debate while he continued to campaign - a reference to whether she has the stamina to be president.Ĭlinton responded: “I think Donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. “That will probably serve him well with his base, but not with anybody else,” Victor said.Ĭlinton’s preparedness showed throughout the evening. The irony was so thick that he was getting so agitated trying to convince Lester Holt that he had a good temperament. “He was practically yelling at Lester Holt about what a good temperament he had. “I’m not sure he accomplished that,” Victor said. Trump’s objective Monday was to solidify conservatives behind him and show undecided voters concerned about his lack of experience that he has enough grasp of policy and the temperament to be president. She apologized - again - saying it was “a mistake.” Her lower moments were predictable, like when pressed about having a private email server while she was secretary of state. “And I effectively think she did that,” Victor said. “It was actually kind of Zen, especially considering the latest poll,” said Jennifer Victor, a professor of political science at George Mason University.Ĭlinton had the tougher task Monday, Victor said - to appear “relatable and trustworthy,” to rally her own liberal base while at the same time appealing to disaffected Republicans who weren’t thrilled about backing Trump. Once she said, “Donald, I know you live in your own reality, but those are not the facts.” “Sometimes it’s almost imperceptible to tell if the dial moves.”Ĭlinton calmly continued to try to answer questions directed at her by Holt, the anchor of the “NBC Nightly News,” even as Trump interrupted her, learning a lesson that Trump’s 16 vanquished GOP primary opponents did not. Whether it moves any voters in a campaign that is a virtual dead heat, according to an average of major polls by, is another story, Perry said. But by the end she was still up and landing blows and keeping her balance, while his legs were getting rubbery at the end and flailing at her and not landing any.” Perry continued with a boxing analogy, saying that “over the 15 rounds, he might have gotten a couple of shots in. What was clear was that he hadn’t studied for the exam and he didn’t get the notes from classmates.” The same can’t be said for Trump.īarbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia and a professor for 35 years said, “I would have scored him a D+. Clinton showed that in her confidence and command of policy. In a presidential debate, preparation is everything. Trump repeatedly interrupted her and moderator Lester Holt, repeated long-debunked factual errors, and ended his pratfall of a performance by lobbing insults at former talk show host Rosie O’Donnell. To even try and defend them in actions such as this one, is an admission of excessive submissiveness to those involved in wrongdoing.Clinton was on offense all night - and she stayed in control of her message and her presentation. Is there a grain of actual goodness to these Clintons. The Clintons and some aides blocking the view of camera to catch the helper secretly take something else from the podium and then quickly hide it before they all depart the scene of the crime. Was he worried something might be seen or photographed. The clip shows the guy in a sheepish manner maybe remove part of the teleprompter apparatus and then be on his way.Įven Bill is seen looking very intently at the podium after the debate. One more than one occasion, a Hillary helper would casually go to her podium and remove something, then pass it off as just collecting her water glasses. Obviously she was reading from the improvised teleprompter created for her by her little team of helpers.Įverything became very apparent as the debate ended and family members and friends were free to walk around. Rarely did she look directly into the camera. Ok, so while watching the debate, I did notice Hillary to glance downwards quite frequently, and routinely look to her right, where Trump was standing all the time looking down at the podium. I mean if they did, then it is beyond funny in a sick joke kind of way. Felt just how could they rig the debate stage. Watched it, though with some misgivings before I did.
